If you don't have to pass emissions, replace the cat with a resonator and switch to a different exiting muffler.
actually, i think the car sounds really good from behind. also, the muffler is not as loud as my old muffler, so in normal driving it is actually preferred.
this scrapy metallic sound seems to be directly related to the air traveling through the exhaust tubing itself rather than the muffler. i did some more searching last night and it seems like a resonator close to the headers would really help the raspy issue.

the OP eventually had a magnaflow resonator installed and it really mellowed out the sound. still raspy, but not nearly as much. he had the exact setup as you before the resonator was installed

sorry to bump an old thread, but i have had my custom exhaust for a couple months now and, while it sounds good most of the time, is very, very raspy at high RPMs, and it hurts my ears.
headers into y-pipe into a 2.5, catalytic converter, 2.5 all the way to a magnaflow something something muffler. will it just go away? it has about 3000, if not a little more, miles on it already. i want it to stop. do i need a resonator?
edit: maybe replace the y-pipe with a y-pipe/resonator? i am assuming this exists.

Anybody with M50's have some advice on what I ought to use? S50s sound badass with what I have, but mine sounds like shit. It's an M50, not S.
Also, glasspacks take less room and the reason they couldn't put one on is because they didn't have one on hand that fit, so they'd have to order one.Last edited by Kerrath; 11-26-2008, 01:20 AM.

I have the ebay ss headers, y pipe into 3in cat, then another y pipe into 2.25's, after that remus muffler. Mine isnt that raspy and not very loud.

So is there any reason I should choose a standard resonator over a glasspack or backwards of that?

im running e36 from headers all the way to the back and have ZERO rasp.
obd2 headers with brand new factory cats and mid pipe running into a plain 328is catback.
it sounds great imo. i'll try to get a video up sometime.

This is my current exhaust:
