as far as catbacks there are many options
ireland engineering, b&b, scorpion, remus, supersprint, ansa etc are the most popular
or you could go custom using a magnaflow muffler with your choice of piping sizes, really you can do whatever you want
and theres always stock

Actually with the M42, you are pretty much limited to Supersprint, Triflow, Bosal (Pretty much OEM replacement), Ansa (rusty in a year or 2), or something custom. Of the custom options, a dynomax super turbo muffer or the magnaflow 11265 muffler seem to be the most popular. I have the latter, soon to also have some inline glasspacks to make it a bit quieter.

Put a flowmaster on it and a 4" tip, works like a dream and sounds wicked (deep and no rasp). If I can find the PN for the ones I use I'll post it here.I'm Not Right in the Head | Random Rants and other Nonsense1st Order Logic Failure: Association fallacy, this type of fallacy can be expressed as (∃x ∈ S : φ(x)) → (∀x ∈ S : φ(x)), meaning "if there exists any x in the set S so that a property φ is true for x, then for all x in S the property φ must be true".

I just cut off my old, stock exhaust, which had a flowmaster on it and it sounded like complete shit. Words can't describe it, but it was also loud as hell.
I am more than happy with the OEM replacement exhaust I put on. It is not easy to make a 4-banger sound good IMO. I've decided to leave the exhaust stock and quiet until a 24v swap comes my way.-Justin

I too have a 91 318, but its an ic
does the magnaflow 11265 you used, exit out the standard valance hole and since it is oval, will it use the stock hangers and brackets ? does it hang lower then stock ?
what came on my car when i got it, is totally wrong, hangs way to low, hanging from plumbers strap , so it bangs and swings a bunch, rattlews a lot inside, but the stock hangers and stuff were in the trunk
the muffler aftr the cat was eliminated at some point in its life
however wiht this mon stock system, and ignoing the rattles etc, I like the sound of the car
thanks

1. It would be easy enough to find a tip that would exit out of the stock hole. The muffler exit lines up pretty well. I'm using a dual tip, though, so I cut out a bigger notch in the valence.
2. Stock hangers don't work because the muffler is so much smaller in diameter. My local shop had to modify the hangers fairly significantly to work. After that, it hangs farly similar to stock. Its just significantly smaller in every way.
My setup is a bit louder than stock but a lot deeper, so you notice it more. With the muffler alone, it will be very very loud; that's why I had the glasspack installed.
