same as any other bmw turbo setup. Look up the turbo write up on e30tech that Jordan325ic wrote up. It's stickied in the Turbo sub-forum. It's based on an m20 motor, but all the components you need are the same (not literally obviously).

there is also the 745i turbo setup that you can bolt on, but you will still need engine management and other misc things

do more research. Don't dive into it not knowing what you are doing. $1500 is cheap for a turbo setup. There is a reason TCD and other companies sell their kits for the price they do.

Why are these ALLWAYS the most important parts of a turbo setup to anyone who is new to this?

^eh it's the easiest part i think(also a noob), my main concern is not blowing up my engine with MS when i do get around to doing it

Well, the downpipe goes from the turbo and is the very beginning of the exhaust system after the turbo. It is rarely included in a turbo kit and the most expensive single part to have a muffler shop make.

The intercooler is not 'needed' for a turbo setup. It simply cools the air coming from the turbo going into the throttle body to produce a denser charge, in turn making more power.

The Blow Off Valve, or diverter valve, is quite possibly the most important part of the system. Assuming you know how a turbo works, if the engine is spinning at 6000 RPM's and the turbo is producing 15 psi, what happens when you suddenly let off the gas pedal? That turbo is still spinning and producing all that boost, but the throttle body is closed, so the boost has no where to go. Thats where the BOV comes into play. When the BOV senses the throttle body is closed is releases all that boost into the atmosphere, or in the case of a diverter valve, it releases it back into the intake system.
