It is really a shame they're still so horribly unreliable.

I am running one of these over my turbo: http://www.zcarsource.com/hood-vent-...989_56318.html

Now, nobody steal my cool old school JDM naca hood vent idea ;)

Hmm, I posted in this thread 5 years ago... my turbo blanket disintegrated after about 2 years, and when I took it off, the turbine housing had corroded. The usual OEM method is a sheetmetal heat shield, which is what I'd recommend if you're really that concerned. You just need a thermal barrier of some sort.

    This.

The best thing you can do is to keep the heat inside your exhaust system, as heat = energy, and energy is what spins the turbo.

Use things like ceramic coating on the turbine housing and downpipes: http://www.jet-hot.com/
Also get a heat wrap for the turbo: http://ptpturboblankets.com/home.php
And heat wrap for the downpipe: http://www.jegs.com/i/DEI/186/010119/10002/-1
You can also add reflective foil to the underside of your hood to prevent it from getting too hot: http://www.jegs.com/i/DEI/186/010393/10002/-1

Think about all the modern BMW turbo V8s. They have the turbos inside the vee. Talk about zero air flow! But they make it all reliable by keeping the heat inside the exhaust and limiting how much escapes in to the surrounding environment.

This guy knows what he is talking about! You want to hold heat in your exhaust stream as it flows through the turbine. Ceramic coat the turbine housing and downpipe, use reflective tape on the underside of the hood. If that doesn't fix it use a turbo blanket as well.

Meth and proper heat insulation can go along ways, a hood vent too.

My turbo burned the foil tape off the hood, but its also a lot closer to the hood than yours is. The turbo blankets do wonders (this is what I ended up doing).

I bought foil tape at home depot and taped the underside of my hood where the turbo is. It actually helped a lot. As long as the car is moving, there is plenty of airflow under the hood and now the hood doesn't heat up too badly with the tape. I'd go with the the suggestion of wrapping your mani, turbo, and dp.

    ;)

Here's my hole. No real reason why I did it but it's
    pretty sweet and ricey :D

Here is my hood mod on my old 325i turbo, the intake heat in the 1/4 mile was going from 30° to 60-65° celcius, but with the hood mod and hedlight out 30° - 40-45 celcius
    Best time 12.04 116.5 mph and 1.7 60 feet
