    M50B20 turbo setup

hey there, i have a 1990 520i that ive decieded to turbo! If your going to tell me to engine swap... just dont... i like the idea of having a euro 2.0L turbo. i think that'd be very unique for a 5 series :)...soo... my car has an inline-6 m50b20 with 150hp and 140 ft/lbs of torque. might be a fair amount in an e30 but in a 3500lbs 520i, i aint moving to fast. i need some advice! im not sure if i should start of with a cheaper ebay turbo setup and build from that or if i should go strait to the heart of my engine and get forged/low comp pistons, and buy a good turbo kit, that will actually last me!.... im a student with limited money and i will slowly be re building this car. i dont really want to be saving up for years to finally get in my car and drive. i dont plan to race this car at the track but i would love some street performance!if i can get 100+ hp id be more then happy.

so with the info above, what you think i should do? ill be doing most of the work myself, well as much as i can do. so let me know!

The only thing I'd buy on eBay for my car would be an intercooler kit. But you have to pick the right one. Make sure it obviously fits and that the pipes have the lips pressed in on the ends so that the hoses don't slide off.

Don't waste your time on eBay manifold rubbish. I know a kid who had one on his car that gave him grief and ended up getting rid of it which was money down the drain for him. Plus the workmanship put into that flimsy Chinese manifold was terrible. Maybe goodntight sells m50 manifolds for an e34 his e30 ones are pretty nice. Give him a pm and find out.

eBay turbos are usually a hit and miss. Sometimes they break badly sometimes you can get lucky and have one last a good few years. But if its one with an internal wastegate then don't bother they tend to have boost creep issues. Also for the same price you can find yourself a used holset Hx35 that are perfectly suited to your motor and are bullet proof.
Same applys for Chinese external wastegates. Some people are lucky and don't have issues others have issues with diaphragms ripping. I personally would spend money on the wastegate because it the only thing stopping your motor from overboosting.
These are the main bits of the turbo kit. Other things you'll need is arp head studs, head gasket either stock with oring or MLS which can also help lower the compression. Also a stronger clutch and most importantly tuning. Megasquirt would be the best option for you.
I think blueapplesoda is selling plug and play kits now, you'll have to double check with him.
There is heaps of other shit I can list, but that will get you started the rest you'll have to start researching and understand what each part does. I hope I didn't ramble on for too long I do that when I get bored. And good luck.

      2.1l M50 Turbo

How you do it to an E34

BTW: Odd thing to post in an E30 Technical Forum, being an E34 / M50 neither of which resemble an E30.
But we do love all things boosty :D
