Is an HX35 rebuild a DIYer

I have a 7 blade HX35 off of a school bus that got rear-ended. It only has 90k on it but I want to have it all cleaned/powdercoated/rebuilt. I have watched a lot of turbo rebuild DIY videos but this would be my first one, so Im a little nervous..

    Any experts here? tips/tricks?

    thanks in advance

Make sure to get the piston ring to seat I just grenaded an hx35 because I rebuilt it and the piston ring didn't seat right so just be careful and take your time

I feel full retard, but.. which on is the piston ring? are you talking about one of the bearings or circlips on the shaft?

Circlips on the shaft. I talked to a diesel shop that rebuilds turbos the guy said the best way to get it to seat is to slide the shaft all the way down to the piston ring and then spin it and while its spinning pop it with your fist and it should seat right in.....found this out after I had already f'd mine up. Just a question why are you rebuilding? Any oil leaks or significant shaft play (fans actually hitting the housing)? If you don't have any of that I wouldn't rebuild it. I just bought another hx35 and I'm just going to run it as is.

I would say as long as it doesn't have excessive shaft play or oil leaks just run it do you know how many miles it has on it?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. This definitely applies to turbochargers.
