I am wanting to start a price list for a turbo M20 and I am wanting a variable turbo for the engine. my reasons are i hate turbo lag and that damn near removes all of it. So if there is a kit for it cool if not who sells them?
is there a variable turbo kit for an E30 M20?

i am. Im going to have a M20B27 just sitting around and my S54 car will be done. cause the engine is the last thing to be done to it. Im just wanting something to keep me busy and then i can get a E30 shell or something and just drop it in and go.Float like a cadillac sting like a Bimmer!:)

Hes right 317222 is the part number you want. Theres a guy on the tech running that setup and he has full boost at 2500rpm iirc.Comment

is there a way to kinda i guess hide a turbo? If anyone has done that id love to see a pic of it . I have no problems with a custom manifold. just curious if its been done.Float like a cadillac sting like a Bimmer!:)

If you can find an on center T4 turbo with an internal wastegate it will be pretty easy.

what you did is exactly what i wanted to see thank you. so you hid your under the manifold again, exactly what I want to do. Do you experience any issue with this set up at all?If you can find an on center T4 turbo with an internal wastegate it will be pretty easy.

Just installation. Had to modify the motor mount and remove the oil cooler. I'll add an aftermarket one someday. I kind of don't like the deceleration exhaust note but that's minor. Ended up spending a little over $2k all in.

Not quite man, on 98RON it get full boost on 2900. On E85 it hits about 200-300RPM sooner. Pretty impressive for a 56mm comp, 65mm turbine exducer.
It aint what the OP is looking for though.
If you are prepared to keep the boost down, like 6-7psi, you can get away with running little BB turbo's like the GT2871 I had. At higher boost you will hit issues with back pressure and detonation though. The little turb boosted very early, but was kinda light-switch-like at higher boost pressures, making it hard to modulate and control. Obviously you are KW limited if you use little 'un's like this.
One of the guys on 'tech was going to use a Holset variable IIRC. It's nozzle range was like from 6cm2 to about 20cm2 or something such. That could present an awesome solution if you can work out how to control it.Comment

Variable vane turbos for gas engines DO exist. Theres one from borg warner (small oem for a porsche) and theres the "aerocharger" lineup, nobody uses them, probably because they're expensive, fragile and ugly. No kit for e30s existent though.Comment
