M20B25 Turbo Setup

So recently ive been wanting more power in my '87 325e, I know that the eta motor isnt going to get me there so ill be purchasing an I motor to swap in. But i figured that whiles the motor is out i might as well do something big!

I wanna build a relatively conservative M20B25 turbo! I dont wanna make stupid power, somewhere around 250-300 would be awesome! I myself have never boosted an engine before so i have a lot of questions. First off, I see some people using a stand alone ignition system but is it possible to run the stock ignition system? Fuel preparation system, what is the cheapest and most reliable way to go? I see a lot of people using a megasquirt but i was curious if there was any other options. Finally what size turbo would get me to those numbers?

I wanna have a reliable built that isnt going to break the bank, any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

As far as engine management goes, I think Megasquirt is the most affordable and is geared for the DIY approach. Other options would be AEM standalone or Hydra EMS.

The two threads helped a lot personally. Make note that Jordan promptly moved to megasquirt shortly after even though he references a TCD chip.

the eta bottom end will be good. Just buy an 'I' head and youll be fine. The eta bottom end and an 'I' head will give you lower compression which is good for boost.

I would also recommend getting megasquirt from whodwho. Or you can wait and buy a turbo kit from Kamotors when he starts to make them. It should be everything you need to boost your car. He's going to make a thread about the details shortly

is it as simple as putting an i head on? dont you need the i manifold and tb? or can you just toss the head on without doing the motronic swap?
