To the OP - Mate I'm glad someone else is considering this route.
I am planning a similar setup for my E30 and its very hard to get good advice as a lot of people are quick to shoot down the idea.
Yes, this system will never match a conventional turbo setup, but that's not why we are doing it. In my case I like the idea of having a system that's different from the norm and, if it works, I can't wait to say "I told you so".
If its something you want to do, go for it. I'm in the process of planning my setup as well however I have a slight advantage in that I have acquired an M42 that's been built for the application and I already have a turbo.

It'll be quieter than having a straight pipe in its place. Yeah it's definitely going to be over 1.5k, guess I'll hold off.

So are you planning then to have an open down pipe off the turbo? If so its very loud and will sound like a turbo, no stealth.
Honestly do whatever you want but seeing this a finished product at budget of 1k-1.5 isnt going to get close at all.

It's going in place of the muffler, there's a heat shield above it. I could also use a turbo blanket, but mostly because I don't want cold water splashing onto a hot turbo.
He also had bright blue wheels and slammed, but we'll see.

No I haven't. Pump, singular. How much oil pressure/flow does a turbo need? I don't see why I couldn't use a regular oil resistant hose. I'd use some kind of fitting for the hose at the motor that would limit how much oil will be sent, so even if a hose did snag, I wouldn't lose all oil pressure.
My friend made almost 600whp on e85 with that tuner, goal was 700 but one of his fuel pumps went out. His cousin also has an 800+whp supra, tuned by the same guy.
Yeah I do like the idea of a rear sump setup, I'll look into it.

What I really wanted to do instead of the m50 swap is an l33 swap, 15:1 compression, ITB's, solid valvetrain, tuned on e85 all motor. But that's going to take at least $8k. L33 is an aluminum block version of the 5.3 used in the GM trucks.
I threw in an m50 last minute because the m42 spun a bearing 2 weeks after I bought the vert so I was broke.

Just to clarify... have you ever put a turbo on a vehicle?
I bought the cheapest everything, but the megasquirt put me over 3k.
To add 6 ft of lines and pumps with no megasquirt would still put you at 3k, and now you forgot the only thing tuning and keeping your engine from exploding due to a bad tune. That is also without a clutch.
I would do a remote oil tank plus oil cooler instead of 500 mile long lines that if they snag on something your whole engine loses oil pressure. The water cooled only turbo is a neat idea but I have never heard of those. You could get a oil only with a remote sump setup for pretty cheap, probably as cheap as the lines to the front plus a remote filter thingy.
If cops impounded your buds car for adjustable timing gears.... how the hell do you think you will get away with all this?
If you want more power could you just legally do a ls1 swap or something? You cant modify the engine from stock, correct?

Interesting idea, and not impossible.........oh, wait.
I would love to keep it under 1k, but 1.5k max.
- scavenger pump $300 (just because one is cheap doesnt mean its good, it pumps the life blood to your turbo, I wouldn't skimp)
- turbo $750 for a decent one
- injectors $350
- fuel pump, lines and fittings $300
- oil lines and fittings $100
- exhaust piping $200
- running an intercooler? (we'll deal with location later, either way you'll have $200+ in piping to get it to the motor, and the intercooler, $150 for a cheap one
- wastegate (knockoff) $100
- BOV $100
- MISC. lines and hoses for wastegate and BOV signal $100
- Do you have means to fabricate? good ammount of welding involved in this, steel and aluminum. If not I'd add at least $500 to have someone do it, most likely more.
I know I'm missing stuff but that is the big must have items. So.......shall we total?
$3150
Yeah you might be able to milk that, but I don't see it being under $2500. Not to mention all the great things others have brought up about running tubing, exhaust, turbo placement and mounting. If this is a daily......don't waste your time because it'll be down for awhile as you trouble shoot these areas.

I would try to take that route if I could afford it, but getting rid of the spare would be a problem. I get a flat almost every year.
Currently I'm running the e36 exhaust with a straight pipe in place of the muffler and the noise is tolerable, but quieting it down with a turbo is something I'm looking forward to :)
Is there somewhere I can tap into that'll send oil pressure from the motor? I was thinking of using regular (fiber?) hoses like the coolant ones, or something oil resistant. I know some turbos have a restrictor in the oil inlet, not sure whether or not the holsets do.

One comment to actually help, this would throw off your budget but comp turbos just came out with a turbo that is only watercooled, internal oil cooling (no feed or drain lines) . Just put one on a remote turbo system on an xj cruiser at work.
You would have enough room to do this if you took out your spare tire well. You can use a vband inlet turbo and just switch it to the muffler when you dont want to be turbo. The turbo helps with noise more than you would think.
I also agree with ka motors...... good -10 an line for a return is more then 10 bucks a foot... you may need a pump just to get the oil back there to begin with. When we did this on a truck it took a few iterations of design just to get something that didnt burn oil and the budget was alooooot bigger then what yours. It also had a bunch more room to fit the charge pipes and exhaust.

I haven't checked pricing on oil lines yet, but found a scavenge pump with good reviews for $150. Plan on using 2.5" charge pipe, shouldn't be too difficult. Fuel line is also cheap, and would've needed to upgrade the fuel system regardless. I know I will have more lag with a remote mount, but top/bottom mount is not an option for me. Others with similar displacement have had good results with the hy35/he341.
Tuning is where I'm completely lost. All I know is I want to use the stock DME but don't know it's limits, or cost to have a tune done. Have a larger 3.5" MAF as well if I can use it. I need help on the specifics for fueling and tuning. Like what size injectors and fuel pumps I can get away with.
I appreciate all the advice, I know I probably sound stubborn, but I understand the cons of a remote setup and accept it.

What about the 10+ feet of oil lines, the $300 scavenge pump, the fact that its very hard to route large pipes under an E30. Megasquirt ECU is $650 alone. Theirs no way your going to be able to use the stock exhaust setup and have a decent setup.and to run ethanol you need MASSIVE injectors, newer fuel line and once again a proper ECU tune
its will be much more expensive to run the rear mount setup, and if not tuned you will pop the head gasket and have to redo everything.
just do it right the first time if your going to go boosted.
