if you have a ford/cobra MAF, read this

this was new to me so i will pass it on. i was getting uber shitty mpg and a random engine light & going into a super lean mode, when the eng would load up in stop and go freeway traffic. thinking this was the purge valve getting angry with the lack of vaccume caused by the cam, (because it would start to behave correctly when the check eng light would go off) i was searching for the cause: did a fuel pressure check (thinking either the press reg or the fuel pump maybe) ok. next wires and cap, ok. check for vac leak, found line from the ITB's to the perge valve/charcole canister in bad shape but not leaking, replaced it, but still no fix. decided to go ahead and clean the cone filter, found a wiring hack job from the previous owner that had escaped me (wire extension just twisted together and wrapped in electrical tape...yikes! although it was still connected), not much else left. looking at the MAF i called one of my friends thats into american cars and asked what the symptoms of a MAF crapping out were. i got the reply that the corba MAF's don't die they just get dirty, esp. if you are running a K&N (oil from the filter collects on the hot wires and makes crap stick to the wires changing the impedence). took the MAF out sprayed it with brake cleaner (non residue cleaner) the wires became instantly and significantly smaller . reinstalled everything, retuned the splitsecond a bit, wammy! power back , no more lean out, throttle responce back, no more random check eng lights, and most importantly MPG back. maybe this is old news to some, but hell i didn't know that, not being a fan of mustakes, so i hope it helps someone out

Yeah, I've heard of this problem on the E36's...

yep, factory maf's have a function where when you shut the car off the computer sends voltage to the elements to heat them up and burn the crud off. When you do a MAF swap you loose this function so you have to physically clean it every so often.
