    Turbo Road Tripping and Cooling

Has anyone here ever had issues with a Turbo during extended road trips?(IE Bimmerfest/E30Picnic)
Also how bad is the additional heat from the turbo?
    • Low Boost(8-12psi)
    • M30B35
    • Arizona(70 days a year above 100f, with high temps of over 120f)

Any special precautions to be used for long distance turbo usage? What can be used to mitigate turbo heat besides ceramic coating all the turbo bits?

You will be sitting in vac most of the time and temps would be the same as an na setup in that situation, mostly.

Under just pulls here and there again, won't really build substantial heat.

Under constant track abuse I'll literally get the headers all the way to the hot side of my turbo glowing.

I've mitigated heat by having a vented hood but best way to keep things cool.

Ceramic coat and wrap all exhaust components under the hood, turbo blanket, ensure Aux fan is working and replace clutch on clutch fan (if applicable), also I've shimmed my rear catches on the hood which allows some air to flow out, finally I've deleted a high beam to further allow cool air for turbo and intake.

I've yet to have any heat related issues with this setup.

Also an oil cooler will further help and extend the life of engine and turbo.

As Frank said, you'll be in vacuum like 90% of the time.

I wouldn't worry about it. I've done trips from LA to Vegas a couple times messing around on the highway and I didn't even think twice about it.

I drive my track car to and from events, some 2-3hrs away. I'd take it across country without batting an eye.

Thank guys, that was all I was really worried about. It's just I have read up on some Turbo builds having catastrophic meltdowns 12 hours into a road trip. Mind at ease now, Thanks.

That's like asking what to do about additional heat from your engine on long distance trips.

But that's exactly what he's asking, lol.
