    Turbo beater build

    1988 BMW 325is 5spd
251k currently on the clock. Purchased it a year ago for $1400 w/ Borbet Type A's (which I sold). Since then I have really done no major work, just flogged the shit out of it, even with it's blown headgasket and myriad of leaks. I started the tear down the day after christmas, and my goal is to have the car running by Feb. 1st.

    The turbo plan:
    Metric blue 12.9 grade headbolts
    666 fabrications manifold adapter
    Holset 16cm h1c turbo
38mm wastegate, 9psi tial spring w/ atmospheric dump
Custom downpipe to full 3" exhaust
2.5" intercooler piping going to a front mounted modified Starion IC
    turbo XS RFL knockoff BOV
    TCD turbo chip
    Begi Rising-rate-fuel-pressure-regulator
    30lb Bosch injectors
    NKG sparkplugs
LC-1 Wideband w/ cockpit gauge, VDO boost/oil pressure gauges (parker performance ash-tray panel + OBC gauge panel)

During the tear-down I replaced the headgasket, timing belt, waterpump, thermostat, and tons of other stuff.

    Here's some pictures:

    During teardown:

Fit the intercooler. It hangs really low now that I look at the picture, so it will probably get flipped. For now it'll do fine.

A friend with a tig welder helped me out by welding the bung for the oil return. He did the best he could given the shitty situation. Does anybody see anything wrong with my placement??

With the bung welded in, there is no way you can screw in the bolt that goes directly above it! I'm going to wait and see if it doesn't leak with 24 bolts instead of 25. This is a big learning process.

Fitting the manifold took a while. I had to switch from studs to bolts because I couldn't fit the it on.

Also bent the oil cooler line for clearance.

    Finally on.

Knock-off tial with authentic 8.7 small blue tial spring:

I bought it from a friend who had bought it from somebody else who said it was a Tial. I opened it up and realized it wasn't. I'm sure it will work fine with a good tial spring.

Bought a downpipe for cheap from somebody on e30tech. It fits OK, but it will need a little modification.

For one thing, the WG piping needs to go!

    Turbo installed. Looks fucking good.

    Trimmed exhaust gasket for clearance.

    How she sits now:

I really can't wait for her to fire up. I have put a ton of hours into it already, and the deadline is looming close.

Oh, mods should move this to the project forum. Sorry.

I see that I'm not the only one who uses brightly colored painters tape to label everything.
      Good job.

Why the huge fuckin turbo with 30lb/hr injectors and 9psi planned? You listened to IXER on e30tech too much. You will barely even get in the efficieny range of the h1c with that in mind. A gt30r or a t4 57 trim would have been a much better fit.

You need to clock the turbo feed/return better.

Yea, I will be. I'm going to be unbolting the turbo and installing the drain as soon as it comes in. Right now it's just there for downpipe fitting/charge pipe fitting. Good tip though.

As for the turbo being too big, I highly doubt it. This turbo will give me plenty of room to grow. 9psi is a starting point. iXer actually considers this particular turbo on the small side. From what I understand people are hitting full boost as low as 2500rpm with this turbo.

And yes, very much so. Everything is horrible about this return bung. It will probably leak, in which case I will use yet another oil pan I have lying around with a proper bulkhead fitting.

Wow. Curious to see how you like it. I'm getting ready to go boost with mine as well.
Do you think the ignition coil will be ok so close to the heat from the turbo? Where do you get the 30lb injectors?

I put the coil on yesterday and that is a concern of mine. If I find that it's a problem I will put a cover over the turbo and wrap the downpipe.

Speaking of which, everybody seems to be able to mount their spark plug wires all the way onto the valve cover, but I don't see how, or what the best method would be.
                    Like this:

I was just going to go to home depot and get some little metal pieces to bolt on with the valve cover bolts, that would just stick up and hold it in place.

This is the sound of a turbo e30 running with an open downpipe and no tuning at all:

Yea, I meant to say "running". That was super rich and cylinder #1 wasn't firing.

It actually runs now. Here's a picture:

Is your car turbod? Ixer knows what he is talking about. Even on such low boost pressures the Larger holsets flow quite well. Plus the h1c or the hx-35(newer version of h1c) are considerably smalller than what some people are running on the m20, just because most people go with certain t3/t4s because they see them on e bay and dont know any better doesnt mean that they are the best. or the gt30r or 57trtim t4
