pay close attention to the turbo lag at 1:22, wicked sounding.

i wonder what its like to be able to do a quarter mile faster sideways spinnign all four tires then most other cars can do going dead straight...

and you say thats a caterpillar turbo?

The smallest junkyard turbo you should even think about
getting is one from the t-birds/mustange.

If you have old buses or ups trucks, or big rigs at the yard
    they'll usually have hx40s or hx35s.

that's even smaller! That's about the size of your fist. If you got it for free, sell it and get a bigger one. If you bought it, you got ripped off.. in which case, you need to sell it and get a bigger one.

Don't just slap a turbo on because you have one.

the volve 850t had a tdo4hl-15g turbo (so you're correct) which works well on a smaller engine (like a 1.5l 4 cyl) for high rpm power, but on a larger engine ( like a m20b25/b27) it will just choke the motor over 4000rpm, maybe even lower.

i am using this exact turbo on my dd (which is in my sig), and i get 7psi at 2400rpm, with full boost coming in around 3500rpm (10psi).
when the car was stock, it made 67hp/74tq at the wheels.
at 10psi, it made 130hp/144tq at the wheels

note: my tercel only has a 3ee motor, which is a 1.5l sohc 12v 4 cyl.
    i am switching to a 5efe, which is a 1.5l dohc 16v 4cyl. should pick up 25-30 whp.

i would definitely recommend a larger turbo for a m20. maybe a caterpillar turbo like this guy:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b49x1CTZnlA

Dont fear the big Diesel turbos that Volvo on them they are more than likely a Holset of some verity. I had a HX40 twin scroll with a T3 bolt patten I bought brand new for 500. Never got around to getting it fitted as Life got in the way of my car hobby.

small turbos are not efficient. go with a larger turbo and you will thank yourself for going bigger.

Yeah... the stock turbos are pretty tiny and aren't really even very efficient for moderate (10psi and up) boost on the 2.3 liter Volvo engines.

the turbos from the 200 and 70 series are 12b and 13c IIRC. One of my buddies replaced his and is using it as a desk ornament. It is sitting next to a soda can, which is roughly the same size.

Keep on the lookout for a decent size turbo

I think the only way you would get it to work halfway decent is to use 2 or 3 of em.

I'm not looking at turbo-ing my e30, but I was curious about this too.
    Why couldn't they be used?
