    car surging/missing at 80km/h

car runs great 84 318i,but once i get up to around 80km/h it seems to be surging or maybe losing power every couple of seconds, could even be an engine miss, i am not positive here. anyone else ever have this? i am at a lose.
    cheers!

i have the same problem. Havent figured it out yet, but my next step is to change the distributer. im hoping that its a timing advance probleme and that a new distrib should do it. But we'll see

      keep in touch

I hope this solves your problem. when are you planing on installing the new one? I am interested to see how it works out for you. How much is a distributer going for anyways?

There are two problems that I think you should look for in terms of your distributor. One, is there any vertical play in the shaft of the distributor? A very small movement 1/16 inch in mine caused the advance system to become inconsistent and eventually moved the rotor out of reach of the plug wire terminals in the distributor cap. This caused my tachometer needle to jump periodically in sinc with a miss. This can be repaired by disassembling the distributor and putting some shim washers at the top of the shaft where it rests on the body of the distributor. The other problem is with the centrifugal weights not moving freely. They need to be oiled periodically with a few drops on the felt dot just under the rotor.

The thing to look for is difficulty using a timing light to get the timing right. If the timing mark jumps around or doesn't move smoothly as rpms are increased, something is probably wrong with your distributor.
