    automatic engine = manual transmission?

Hey guys, i'm totally new to E30 engines/transmissions [I come from MKII Jettas/Golfs] but i'm learning [been wanting one for years]. So my friend has a 85' 318 with a dying M10. He sourced a clean automatic 84-85 [not too sure which one, i forgot what he said] 318 and asked me if the engine would bolt on to the trans. I'm absolutely not too sure, so I came here for the proper answer.

Yes, but you'll most likely need a pilot bearing since the engine is out of automatic car. Also there were some changes in 84/85 318i cars in terms of how the vacuum lines are run etc. Better to swap the whole engine with all components over or you'll be chasing things.
