is the transmission for a 1984 318i the getrag 240? i just bought a 318i and the transmission is dead.

Yes they are different, the m10 engines in 84 and 85 had a getrag 240. 86 and newer up to like the mid 90's had a getrag 260, 260/5 and 260/6, these transmission were used in both 4 and 6cyl cars.sigpic

e30 m10s had getrag 240. e30 m40/m42s had getrag 240 (with different bell housing) e30 m20s had getrag 260 (etas had holes in the bell housing. some had larger output flange which used larger guibo) 260/5-6 were used in e28/e24.?
