    rerouting and ICV concerns

bought this little gem a week ago with a funky cold start idle.
84 318i 200,000 miles. One of the POs put in a different ICV and used off the shelf hosing from autozone.

    Previous ICV:

updated with correct ICV but still using generic hoses:

comparing this to my bentley manual it doesn't look like things are matching up. can anyone post a pic of their m10 engine bay or point out what you see wrong in my pic?

idle is running high with this new ICV but i'm investigating that issue.

    thanks r3v

I have an '85, and my ICV faces 180 degrees the other way (electrical plug towards the front). Not sure how the 84' should look though. Also, If I were you I would run the fuel supply to the rail under that vacuum hose.

thanks for the reply. from what i've seen in other pics i've found online the same is true for the '84, it should be the other direction. i'll fiddle with it some more.

You are missing the bracket holding the ICV, that might make things interesting.

However, I must be missing something here. Mine has a slightly different routing.

            I am so confused...

lol it looks like someone misrouted your M10 lines. Is that a piece of garden hose coming off the ICV?

RealOEM has pieces 15, 20, & 21 NLA, perhaps that is not really necessary.

Following the diagram, 20 -> 21 -> 22 -> 16 -> 17 -> 18 -> 20 is just a loop. Maybe this was an effort to stabilize idle that wasn't needed after all. FWIW the Bentley diagrams look just like my photo. I'd have to go downstairs and poke under the hood to know more, the Bentley doesn't describe that loop in any of the text or diagrams.

Yeah, that was a piece of garden hose. I was a bit lazy on my photo, this is how it stands today:

Which Bentley Diagram are you looking at?

                From page Engine-30
Its labeled "Idle air bypass hose"

You're right, I do see it in Engine-30.

However I was looking in Fuel System-20: Figures 4-28, 5-1, and 5-6 through 5-10 don't show that idle air bypass hose. Mysterious.

sure does looks like someone did a major rerouting on my system. i am indeed missing several parts compared to the diagram.

where does #15 in the above diagram return to?
i see that 84driver and i are both missing that T and the return hose. i was at a wreckers today and the 84 318i i was looking at also did not have the 2 T's with the return hoses.

out of curiosity, 84driver, what's your build date? the wrecker car i saw today was 7/83, mine is 6/83.

in any case new ICV works great and i've been replacing a bunch of parts.
ICV, AFM, waterpump, thermostat, fuel filter. tomorrow putting in a new fuel pump (in tank)
