    Top speed in each gear?

    I have no idea if the diff on it is stock or not, only that I have hit over 40mph in 1st gear and over 70mph in 2nd gear. I have never hit the rev limiter and since the tach doesn't work I back off when it really screams. 70mph in 2nd gear doesn't seem right though. Are my ratios probably messed up or is this pretty normal?

    Lol r u sure its 70? Check your diff should be a little tab on it with numbers. Or I think your speedo maybe off. I hit top 28-30 1st gear at limiter w/ a 3.91 diff. What year is your car?

      It's an 84. Speedo was confirmed by gps. Off by 1 or 2 mph, I'm guessing due to bigger wheels that were on the car when I bought it. I don't think it would make that much of a difference though. I'm positive the speedo was past 70 though. Didn't believe it myself so I did it again to be sure. Based on the rest of the car, I wouldn't be surprised if the PO took a diff off a 6cylinder without knowing the difference. I'm not too worried about it since I'm planning on swapping in a 4.10 and rear discs from my m42 parts car, just curious about it.

        I wouldn't run a 4.10 would be horrible for DD, but would be great for short track. I already push 4k at 80 in 5th with a 3.91 diff. U may have like I think it's a 3.64 diff.

          My second gear gets me to about 58mph or so before it starts banging off the limiter

            agree. but I'm running a little less than the factory rev limit... and I have a 3.73.

                Thanks guys. Right now my 91 318is project is the main priority but it is good to finally know why my car felt soooo sluggish through the gears. I figured eh, its an m10 and its probably just trashed. As far as the 4.10 diff, I may just throw it on there until I can find/afford a 3.64 or 3.91. Car is hardly being driven so it isn't a huge issue.
