    what do you guys set your timing at? i'm having trouble getting the car to rev past 1500 rpms at 10degrees advanced and i need to get the timing set somewhat right so i can rule out that. because im trying to get an e21 m10 swap from hell to run right so i can get rid of it. but right now its running so rich that the headers will glow red so im thinking i have a fuel managment issue. as far as i can tell they're stock injectors and a stock jetronic ecu.

    my original thought was that the afm was wrong but the numbers match to an 85 e30. my ecu i was told is matched to a 84. heres the orignial add from the engine that was bought ( i bought the e21 as an unfinished project that needed to be wired up and its turning into a nightmare. )

    i've been fucking with this thing for about half a year and i'm so close to getting it right... any help is much appreciated.

    If the headers are glowing, it's probably lean. If you're having trouble advancing the timing, that would be why. The 310 is the right ecu for an 84, I'm pretty sure the 85's are 328. Make sure it's right distributor, those were also different for 84. I'm pretty sure the 85 ends in 096.

          yeah it is. the car runs smooth but wont rev up past 1500. i can advance the timing and it will but it wont rev about 800 above what ever it's idling at.

          with an oiliscope on the injectors it looks like the computer is trying to pulse the injectors properly but the pulse too much at idle and too little when being held at a "higher rpm" almost like the computer is giving it the wrong fuel pulses.

              A common mistake is to mix 318 and 2002/E21 cams and dist's. It will idle fine but when you go to rev it retards instead of advancing and generally has the exact symptoms you describe. It might be worth a second look. The dist needs to be spinning the same direction as the arrow on the outside of the dist body.

                  You can swap distributor gears with a 2002, or go to Megasquirt with edis and remove the distributor all together

                    Thats what i had to do to get the disttibutor to match up with the cam in the first place, i never put 2 and 2 together because it wouldnt run. But now it does so i just need i different distbutor.

                    And no, megasquirt is expensive.

                      You will need an E21 dist if you want it to be electronic like the 318 one you are now using. I dont have any but there is a decent E21 forum at bimmerforums that might help you find one.
