We've had the intake boot on and off a bunch of times and while cleaning couldn't find any cracks.

The fuel filter and main fuel pump look brand new, so I think the PO changed those in an attempt to make it run.

The 318i (I've been told) has one engine ground and we replaced that with a new custom ground line made by a gentleman here on the forum. It's also coated in dielectric grease.

We've used 2 different fuel rails with different FPRs on them and the same results have been found.

Don't forget the grounds on the intake manifold. I painted my manifold and forgot to clean that point up and it caused problems for me. Also there's a small ground strap from the valve cover to the battery tray. I'm not sure how much good it does but it's there for something.

Ah that's true! We have both those grounds bolted down at the rear bolt on the IM because it didn't look like it would reach to the front and the valve cover to battery box is for "radio noise suppression". But that one is brand new and super clean

I finally found out how to insert images, and wanted to show off the 84 318i

I guess I'm going to check compression and double check that I'm getting spark at all plugs.

              OK guys, here's where we are. I purchased a bunch of replacement parts, including;

              New Battery
              New Water Pump
              Water Hose Refresh Kit
              New Spark Plugs
              New Belts
              New Fan Clutch
              New Pilot Bearing
              New OE Clutch Kit
              New Slave Cylinder
              New Input Shaft Seal
              New Selector Rod Seal
              New Throw-out Bearing
              New Gaskets
              New Water Temp Sensor
              New Oil Pressure Switch
              New Ground Straps
Very lightly used transfer fuel pump

I put it all together and installed the engine in the car. I'm getting spark at all plugs, but the car won't start. It will crank all day but it won't kick over. Spraying carb cleaner in the intake manifold doesn't alter this at all. You can hear the fuel pumps prime the system and you can see fuel flowing in the lines (clear fuel lines).

I checked compression, 1,2 and 4 are 170 and 3 is 100!!! (cold of course).

We ran all the Bentley DME and Idle Stabilization Relay tests and everything is within spec except for the Throttle Switch and AFM. Ordered a new Throttle Switch and a used AFM that will be here tomorrow. Also snagged both itms used from a local pick-n-pull yesterday. The AFM seemed to be almost identically out of spec from the original I have and the throttle switch also was out of spec. We decided we'd try them both anyway....However, now the starter won't actuate and the fuel pumps stay on constantly. We put the original AFM and the completely non-functioning original throttle switch back on and the starter still won't actuate and the fuel pumps stay on...

Does anyone have any idea what that might be? Is that indicative of a blown main or fuel relay?

well if it was at least cranking before you installed the last two parts and now it wont even do that, whatever you messed with seems to be the problem. maybe wiring, maybe ground? Just logically thinking about it

I removed the newish afm and uninstalled the throttle switch and the same result persists

I got a working afm for testing purposes. The gate sometimes gets stuck open but the electrical portion of the sensor worked fine. I can throw it in the mail to help you test anything or whatever. lmk man...and if you're getting spark and fuel for sure...then timing seems to be the problem. do the m10s have CPS?

Current thought is that the dizzy isn't sending a signal
