    No spark to coil

    I picked up an 85 318I to play with and it isn't getting spark to the coil at all. Can someone give me a list of things to check off that could cause it. I've been looking online for hours with no luck. Any help is abdicated. Thanks

      got a spare 12v coil?

      could be a coil, could be the internals of the distributor, i think computer, try them in that order

        got voltage at the coil?

        12v on one of the terminals?

          replaced them all...ordered an ingition control moduel to try...should be here soond.

            didnt work....8( and no no power to the positive side of the coil at all

              Get the wiring diagrams for the car from http://wedophones.com/BMWManualsLead.htm and look to see where coil power comes from. I think it is like a 325 and comes from the ignition switch.
              The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

                  i went through the entire system and the last thing i got to do is the DME.

                  check my thread if you like, maybe it might help


                  my car died suddenly on the road, so i thought it was the dizzy because i was getting no spark, replaced it, it worked for 1 day and it died again, then i checked the coil, the specs were a little off but i decided to get a new coil anyways, car fired up and worked for a day before dying again... i said screw it, so i replaced the ICM as well and fuel pump and fuel pressure regulator, cleaned the injectors.

                  then now, my fuel relay buzzes so i replaced that with a new one too...

                  ok with all these new parts, my car FIRES UP but doesnt stay on... it dies right after.

                  so i am now guessing it could be a DME issue, something is not trigger the DME to feed fuel data and voltage or whatever.

                  chagood - for you to test the coil, you have to test resistance between the middle terminal and the negative, and the positive terminal and the negative.

                  it should be near spec as mentioned the bentley.

                  if you are not sure how to do it, your local autoparts store should be able to help you test to see whether the coil is within spec or not too

                  if the coil is in order, then i would suspect it would be the dizzy.

                  if you replaced the dizzy, then there is a voltage issue, your ignition system is not getting enough power to produce a spark, check the lines and harnesses to make sure all the lines are continuous.

                  if everything checks out, i am out of ideas
