'84 318i starts, won't idle

as title states, car starts, will run for 5-10 seconds if given throttle, but will die with no throttle input. found oil in intake boot between box and intake, smells faintly of gas.

new ignition system too.

Try disconnecting the afm. It could be stuck, especially if you have a residue in the intake. It will run rough with no afm so you would need to get a new one.

got it evened out?

its running again, anyway. only difference was jumping it from a running vehicle instead of a charger, and between 15-20 degrees warmer air temperature. oh, and the temp gauge works now...
