    E21 Turbo M10 into an E30?

    I have the opportunity to buy a nice e21 with a modified century/bae/rayjay kit. The motor has been completely redone, with forged internals, a custom/aftermarket intake manifold, etc. The car is in decent shape and has tons of body and suspension modifications, but I have really been looking for an e30 project/track car for a while now.

    So basically my questions are (please bear with me I am somewhat of a bmw newbie):

    >>What are the differences between the M10 that comes in the e21 as to the M10 that comes in the e30?

    >>What would I have to do to put the M10 w/ the turbo kit (other than re-routing of i/c pipes) from the e21 into an e30 318 chassis?

    >>The e21 M10 uses mechanical injection, correct? What would be needed to convert it to EFI for the e30 chassis? Standalone would be the obvious choice, but I would like to see if anyone has taken another route like using the e30's harness, that is if anyone has ever done something like this.

    Cliffnotes: I want to take a turbo M10 motor out of an e21 and put it in an e30... What do I need to do?

    the german models had the same injection on them. All can tell you is that in germany- with german models of both, it would be very straight foreward swap.-- but I feel the E21 with the turbo M10 is much cooler/ oldskool.

          e21 w/ turbo m10 definately, if e21 already has so much mods, do fix what is needed to be fixed, rebuild everything and you'll have a much cooler car!

            You could probably swap it pretty easily but I would definately swap from CIS to EFI.

            The BAER, century, and other kits from the 70's are pretty antiquated with no intercooler and ghetto fuel enrichment.

            I would intercool and megasquirt it.

              Some e21 motors have injector bosses in the head and others have the bosses in the manifold.

              If it has the injectors in the head, you will have to plug those bosses and use a e30 318 manifold/injection.

                Ah, the intake manifold isn't factory and I don't recall seeing injector bungs in the pics from the engine build. So I guess that means I will have to plug the head. Hopefully I can get the aftermarket manifold modified to fit the e30 injection, seems like going back to a stock manifold would be a waste.

                      I have one of those heads with the injector bosses in the head. I was thinkong that would be a great place for wet NOS nozzles.

                        IIRC the early E21 M10 engines have the injectors in the cylinder head, late E21 M10s have them in the inlet manifold.

                        There's nothing wrong with a turbo CIS system. Porsche, Volvo and Audi did it along with others. People also do custom CIS turbo setups, they work good.

                          You can always just bore out the injector bungs in the head. You only need to bore a little to accept the standard e30 size injectors and seals. We do this with the 2002 tii manifolds all the time. I'm taking an early e21 manifold (log style) and boring out the injector bungs for a megasquirted setup.

                          Only downside is if you put a ton of work into the head and then it cracks....

                          Sounds like there already may be a ton of work (porting, CC, valves, cam, etc) into that head)

                            I think its the other way around, my cars an 82 320is and it has the injectors in the head
