....is it possible to retrofit to a 84 318i 5 speed? Mine has a lot of slop and most of the bushings are discontinued.

a lot of vendors on this board carry those bushings still. BMA, Blunt, etc.
I refreshed every single damn one of them and although the throw is shorter and notchier since I switched to a z3 1.9 shifter there is still a lot of "play" when in gear. Chock it up to that one sided selector rod. There are Dual Sided Selector Rods that will make a huge difference but I honestly feel like just the bushings alone have sufficed for me over the last 3 months since my rebuild.sigpic -
