Learn to research mate, MAHLE catalogue is your friend, so is 2002faq
From said catalogue: It looks like there were two different pistons for the e30 318i M10. One with 9.5:1 CR, with a height of 4.6mm. Its seems as though all cars from 84 to 5/85 had these pistons, ie your car. No mention made of difference to US cars but I would still double check this.
There is another piston from cars with a cat convertor, this is 8.2:1 CR and has same piano dome but only 1.5mm high.
There are even high comp pistons that were in earlier chassis, not sure if they made it into the very early e30's.
EDIT: sorry, I made a mistake, the piano tops refer to the earlier M10's. E30's still have a raised dome thats similar though
so whats the difference between domed pistons and the pistons from a hemy. is the idea behind the shape of a hemy piston, which i think is oval in shape, and a domed bmw piston the same. just to raze compression?
The Hemi is called a Hemi cause of the shape of it's combustion chamber, not the shape of the pistion.

7psi is safe on the stock engine, but you will be wanting more. Trust me that's how I got started. It can handle 10psi very well also but you deff need an intercooler and after market ECU to make it reliable.
