PCV or similar hose question (picture)

Two separate questions, please see picture.

What is the mess of hoses for here? This motor looks mickey-moused.
What is the small cylinder on the top/rear of the intake?

it's the idle control valve the part going into the manifold is the cold start valve.

Thanks. Is this whole mess of hoses necessary? It definitely doesn't look like BMW would have let a car out of the factory looking quite like this.

ICV and the Cold Start valve are factory, if the hoses were never changed they are probably cracked (one is a fuel hose btw). But the mess you have there doesn't look like it's using factory hoses. I'll post a picture later tonight if you want to see how it should look with factory hoses and nothing extra..

So this is driving me nuts. I've got such a bad vacuum leak that I can unplug any of the small vacuum hoses and the engine doesn't even notice. Can you post a picture of the PCV BS from a stock M10B18 so I can see what it should look like? I'm combing through microfische pictures on realoem.com but its not helping yet.

It looks to me like my hoses are routed quite wrong compared to this picture.

Also, I find it odd that vacuum hose hose 22 appears to loop back to itself from hose 20 to the tee fitting 18 to hose 17. Why on earth would this be?

Where does hose 19 connect to - the valve cover?

I also presume that hose 15 connects to the rubber intake pipe as well. Correct?

The car runs okay, and I have adjusted the idle a few times only to have the idle settle around 1800rpms after driving. I can only assume its the car trying to learn to compensate for the leak.

If you notice in my first picture, my car has a tee fitting in hose 11. I suppose its possible that the engine has been replaced and is no longer the original with a mfr date of 12/83. Are there any variations of this hose mess on any other M10s?
