    BMW 324d burning oil

    Hi all,

I own a '89 bmw e30 324d so with a m21d24 engine and have been having some issues lately.
I am no mechanic nor do i have a lot of experience with working on engines but i'd like to learn more.

Recently my engine started to make a ticking sound and I usually hear it while accelerating next to a wall or objects so when the sound bounces off.
I have already adjusted my valves but this did not change anything.
I am pretty sure i'm burning oil as my car smokes a lot on startup and shakes a lot, which gives me the impression it runs on a cilinder less. (the shaking goes away quickly and immediately when i press the gas pedal)
I've read that this could be because of oil on the glow plugs on startup. It also spits out oil out of the exhaust.

Could this ticking sound be connected to the oil problem in my combustion chamber?
Where do I start to fix these problems. I'm thinking of doing a compression test.

    Thanks you!
