Need help identifying a little part

What is this little doo-dad, and what's the part number for it? This one is still in the cylinder head, the other was still in the block when I removed the head, but it had a tiny little crack in it, so I pulled it out. I need to know what it is, and what the part number for it is so I can get a new one. I just got my new engine gasket kit today, and I want to start putting this thing back together!

That part is supposed to be stuck in the block to keep the head gasket, head and block all in line for many fun filled years of E30 madness.

That's known as a "dowell pin", and even though it's a hollow pin, it serves the same purpose: that being to locate the head precisely on the block deck. It's made from sheet steel, and it will have a seam. Unless it's rusty, bent (hammer), or chewed up (pliers...), it does not need to be replaced. It should fit snugly to tight in the head, and preferably tight in the block. There are two in the M20.

The one in your picture looks A-OK.
