another great review for Mark D

I just installed a Mark D chip in my 86 ETA and all i can say is WOW!

The car idles smoother, and the performance is phenominal compared to the stock programming. the chip woke the car up and it is a pleasure to drive. It also arrived in a timely fashion, and was an easy install. Also, the power band is immediate. Theres no issues such as the common "dinan lag" in other chips.

The downside: gas mileage will decrease significantly over the next couple weeks as I wont be able to keep my foot off the accelerator :).

Great chip for a great price!

BUY IT! USE IT! and ENJOY!

I didnt take pics because I wasnt thinking and was too excited to get it done. For a DIY tho, here ya go:

Its simple. This is my first DIY, so pardon me if it sucks.

Step 1: using a 13 mm wrench disconnect battery and wait 10 minutes to let the system kinda drain out.

Step 2: open glove box and drop access panel using a philips screw driver.

Step 3: Drop DME by removing 4 10mm bolts.

      Step 4: unplug DME carefully.

Step 5: Make sure you are grounded and have discharged static. This can be done by using rubber gloves, washing hands in alcohol, or using static straps (available at radioshack for about $5-$10). Remove 4 screws on cover of unit (side without labels) using a philips screw driver.

Step 6: Remove rubber plug in center of board carefully and unscrew the 4 screws (2 phillips and 2 flat blade) being careful to not let the screw drivers slip

Step 7: carefully fold out circuit board and locate eprom chip. It shouldnt be hard to find.

Step 8: very carefully pry out the chip with a small flat blade screw driver little by little at each end. You'll want to save this chip just in case.

Step 9: carefully place new chip, making sure the notch on the chip is in the same location as the one you removed and that all pins are lined up properly.

Step 10: carefully apply firm pressure to both ends of chip until it is installed.

Step 11: carefully put the unit back together and reinstall. Check to see if you have smoke or a burning smell and if the unit gets hot before reinstalling the access panel.

Step 12: Start the car and let it "relearn" its functions for a few minutes.

      Step 13: Drive and enjoy.

Thanks for the chip DIY. Something the old hands take for granted, but I'm getting a MarkD and will use your write-up.

How do I figure out which ecu I have, without taking the whole thing out? Is there a way to decode it from the VIN or production date?

easiest way to do it is to remove the access panel in the glovebox, or just drop down a portion of it so you can see the ecu. The labels are facing down so its easy to read the number. The access panel is held up in front by 2 or 4 screws and then theres two twist clips on the sides (one per side). That way youll be certain of which one you have. Should take only 5 minutes.

Is my car the only car that loses bottom end power after the ECU has had time to adjust? when I first install the chip, the car runs amazing,( a little rough) spins the tires off the line,I leave a good review, but about a week later the car smooths out, loses some bottom end power and just feels plain. If I reset the ECU the bottom end power comes back.

dont know what to tell you. my ecu smoothed out within about a half hour. its been installed for about 2 days now (havent driven it today yet) and i havent had a single loss of power or other issue. my car is an E though, so i dont know if that makes a difference.

Did you get the Mark D chip?
