Sorry to thread jack but one question, do you have to take this nut off when replacing timing belt??

I dont believe you have to remove it to do the timing belt, at least thats what I hear. I just bought my first E30 and the timing belt was broken but the PO pulled the crankshaft pulley to attempt to fix it. I was told that it doesnt have to be removed to change it though, but I could be wrong.Comment

No, the bolt holding the harmonic balancer does not need to come off for doing a timing belt. Leave it on.
If you have to take it off for an engine disassembly, then yeah, a really long cheater bar on at least a 1/2" breaker bar, car in 5th gear, emergency brake on, car on the floor.
Or, a good impact wrench can get it.
I don't really know why that bolt has to be so tight. It just holds the harmonic balancer on.1987 E30 325is
