How do you get off the crankshaft bolt on the front end for the timing?

With a really big bitch bar! It is torqued to 300+ ft. lbs. Why are you removing it anyway?

I dont believe you have to remove it to do the timing belt, at least thats what I hear. I just bought my first E30 and the timing belt was broken but the PO pulled the crankshaft pulley to attempt to fix it. I was told that it doesnt have to be removed to change it though, but I could be wrong.

No, the bolt holding the harmonic balancer does not need to come off for doing a timing belt. Leave it on.

If you have to take it off for an engine disassembly, then yeah, a really long cheater bar on at least a 1/2" breaker bar, car in 5th gear, emergency brake on, car on the floor.

Or, a good impact wrench can get it.

I don't really know why that bolt has to be so tight. It just holds the harmonic balancer on.
