BMW likes to put random shit on their cars just to fuck with future mechanics, you don't need it.
nah, just fucking with you. That is (fucking DUH, obvious shit here) a spark sensor, tells the DME when the plug is firing, so it knows the crank position sensor is OK.
Yeah, it is pretty necessary.
So, since you asked a retarded question, I am gonna ask one back: Why?

That sensor provided the Cylinder ID signal, which is used by the DME to time firing of each injector bank. Without that signal the DME reverts to firing both injector banks at the same time. The car will run okay that way, but gas mileage will suffer and the engine will run a bit rich.The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
