I am not sure if this really matters now or not but I thought I would post it anyway.
My e30 has been running like crap for a while now but I could not really find the problem. I cleaned stuff, replaced stuff, etc. Was gearing up to do a whole tune up and was not happy about $100 for wires, and thinking that I needed to do the exhaust as well. It was getting really loud and sounded terrible. So I ordered a coolant temp sensor and installed it (5 min by the way).. then with the hood up started the car and heard the 'nasty' vacuum leak I had going on the intake manifold. This was a surprise to me because in the past I had searched for a vacuum leak and did not find any. So, 4 hours (NOT A HARD JOB TO DO AT ALL, just TIME CONSUMING) and $11.00 later, yeah only $11 for the intake seal + black high temp goo (I had some already) I have not only solved my surging I have also solved my loud exhaust, my check engine light, and my stalling. yeah, she was running rough.
So if you are having some surging issues, do the intake gasket, even if it looks/feels/sounds like it is not a problem. It may be bad anyway. In the process replace any vacuum lines that 'may' also be getting bad.
it will save you some headaches and some money. I almost ditched my car and figured that if this didn't work I was going to do just that. I even had my eye on a 2001 BMW 325i or a 2005 Saab 9-3. It would have been no more E30 for me. Now the car starts up, doesn't stall until it is warm, the exhaust is quiet and does not drone with low rpms, and.... the check engine light does not come one. The motor even feels stronger. Heck maybe it is time for a oil change and a beer. Certainly a beer.
Well I hope this helps someone else out at some point. $10.99 for a seal I am a whole car a head.
Enjoy. Thoughts and comments welcomed.
