New water pump installed now leaking!!!

Put a new water pump, timing belt and tensioner on my 88 325 seta. Got everything bolted back up, started refilling system with coolant and wouldn't you know, i have coolant dripping from what appears to be the water pump. All hose connections are dry. Cant see exactly where the leak is but coolant is definitely dripping from the general water pump area. Any ideas before I tear it all back down? This is so frustrating!

stupid question but I have to ask it, did you install a gasket between the pump and the block?

Yes I did. The leak is not huge but it's constant trickle.

Did you use a sealant with the gasket. Always use sealant. Permetex make a water pump and thermostat sealant you can get at any local shop.

Was all the old gasket material removed from the block?

Were the water pump bolts torqued to 16 ft-lbs?

No matter how it's sliced, you'll have to undo stuff just to get a look at the water pump and access the bolts. If you have to redo it (and I was just down this road ):

Get a new gasket, and invest in some gasket adhesive/sealant.

Since the timing belt is already on, and as long as the tensioner bolt is left secured, you won't need the tensioner spring this time (just remember where you stored it). That will spare you a lot of hassle and possible damage to your new gasket as you work the top of the coolant pump into position.

Be careful on the bolt threading and torquing as stripped block threads will be another coolant leak source.

Thanks for the advice. No sealant was used. Should have known better. I'll have to redo this again this weekend.

            Thanks

Yeah, redo it. Same thing happened to me, I had torn the gasket when i tried to put the spring tensioner on there.

BTW the water pump is supposed to have slights leaks here and there but not a trickle.

This was the reason why I had to do my water pump twice......make sure every bit of the old gasket is cleaned off of the mating surfaces or you will get leaks. As far as sealant, I only used enough to get the gasket to stay in place while I was installing the pump; you should not need any more than that.

its easier to follow directions and do it right the first time. rushing through will cause it to fail.

                  good luck

You can replace your waterpump without taking off the timing belt. That's good news.

i had the same issue once, when i took the water pump back off i put some sand paper to the surface to make sure it was nice and flat. then i put a little greese on both sides of the gasket put it all back together and now no leeks.
