SOS We are at a stand still. Timing belt climbing up the sprocket

    Hello,
We have installed a new belt and sprocket and noticed the belt wants to climb up on the sprocket. The pictures show if the engine is turned CCW or CW. Is this normal?

    Thanks,
    Chuck

That would mean that the sprockets and or tensioner aren't all in the same plane. The first think I'd try would be a new tensioner if that wasn't part of the belt change. If that fails to solve the problem I'd suspect the adjustable cam sprocket.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Have you turned it through a bunch of rotations for it to settle in?

Rotation the solution? Does not seem to help

Yes, we turned 3 or 4 times. What is odd is that if we turn CW the belt climbs up on one side and CCW it shows up on the other side of the sprocket.

Aren't the retard and advance gradients supposed to be at the timing mark on the sprocket? I don't know, I'm just asking.

Just as a step in the procedure for putting on the new timing belt, you first loosen adjusting bolt for the tensioner, push the tensioner to the fully open(loose) position then install the belt perfectly straight between the cam sprocket and the secondary(oil pump) sprocket, wrapped around the crank sprocket and lastly behind the tensioner. Then you loosen the adjusting bolt allowing the tensioner to provide the tension on the belt. Then two or three turns later, tighten the adjusting bolt and pivot anchor bolt on the tensioner.

If you have belt riding up on one side or the other, you have obstruction at one of the sprockets or you have a tensioner that isn't tense.

I agree, I don't think your tensioner is set right......
