    i need help!!!please

i got a 1987 325is that i recently purchased. it had been sitting for 2 years i got it running but when i first start it, it runs like shit and its flashing the battery and the brake lights on the cluster, then when i kill it and start it again, it stops flashing the lights, but still runs kinda shitty do you think this might have something to do with the alternator? maybe the connections or something?

It sounds like it hasn't been running in 2 years. Do a tune up, put some fresh gas in it and see where you're at. The lights flashing are because it was stalling it wasn't sure if it was running or not.

Like Fidhle007 said. Too low of RPM's and the alternator won't charger proprely, and you may see the lights act like the car isn't running when the RPM's dip low. Then go out when it surges back up.

This is a dumb question, but I have to ask. You do have a brand new battery in there right?

The battery won't mean anything as long as the alternator is working, as long as it has enough juice to start the car... Seriously though, new plugs, cap, rotor and fresh gas and call me in the morning.

Do all of the above recommendations along with some Seafoam through a vacuum line and fuel injector cleaner in the gas tank. Put some miles on it and see what happens!

If the battery was good it would cover for the alternator if it was spinning too slowly to supply proper voltage. We see it a lot in cars that have underdrive pulleys.

But that's kind of moot in this situation because I'm pretty sure that A: this car DOESN'T have underdrive pulleys and B: the battery light is an indication of the CHARGING SYSTEM, not the battery status.
