Bleeding coolant.

I was searching through overheating posts as i have a overheating problem. Mine seems to run between 1/2 and almost the red zone. Especially when i am idling. I have a small leak somewhere cause i can smell it but cant really find it. So i guess I probably have air in the system also.

I bled my car but it was on a level surface. Mostly clear fluid came out? It says bleed till coolant comes out. So should it come out green? Or just fluid in general cause it didnt seem to have much air in it.

With me working full time and 15 hours of school i will work that in. Ive been trying to track it down but dont have the time to tear the front apart at the moment. Thanks for the help though.

the way to bleed is to loosen the bleeder on the thermostat housing and watch the fluid come out until its no longer bubbling out but a steady stream coming out. thats when you know you have all the air out of the cooling system and the bleeding has been done right. but like dude said find that leak! what engine is it?

Oh ok. It just says coolant in most posts but the liquid looks clear coming out. Its the eta engine. 1986 325. I smell antifreeze but i dont see it anywhere. It must be real slow.

do they have a dye that can add to the coolant by any chance?

i would be more concerned about the leak because i feel like it will just continue to suck air into the system.

I think i found the leak. The hose from the water pump to thermostat housing. Leaking pretty bad but i dont see any holes or cracks?

maybe the hose clamp isn't on tight enough? this has happened to me a few times after installed a new t-stat.

Yeah i tightened it down real real tight but it seems to slowly be leaking still. The whole housing was corroded pretty bad. So i ordered a whole new wateroutlet and thermostat housing from Bmwautohausaz. With a 71 degree thermostat and new hose (water pump to thermo). hopefully replacing that all will fix the problem!. It runs halfway then as i drive goes between half and 3/4 fluctuating the entire drive. Has me confused.

The coolant temp indicators on e30's aren't exactly precise, is the needle flickering from time to time too? could just be high resistance in the coolant temp circuit or a bad ground at the back of the cluster.

If the car tends to heat up only in stop and go traffic or at long stop lights and cools off again when moving the fan clutch is worn out, that is all the wisdom i have to share about e30 cooling systems /rant

It does do that mostly. Gets hot when i sit there. But i did the roll newspaper up test and it wouldnt even get close to slowing down.
