    Coolant level sender

    1990 325i

My coolant light is coming on in the SI board. I pulled the sensor and cleaned it up and it still is coming on. I tried jumping the wire to shut it off till I got a new but it was still on.

Can you jump that wire and get the light to turn off? I dont know, I just tried it. Can you test the sender? I have the haynes and chilton and neither tell me how to test it, if its possible. I hooked up my multimeter but didnt know what to test and didnt see much difference in the readings.

There is a resistor in the sensor. Sometimes the wire seperates and you can just solder it back together for a temporary fix

I also have the same problem, could it be a bad connection between the sensor and the harness?

there is a metal piece in the inside of the float, that needs to be cleaned. It usually get gunked up to the point that it loses the contact. you cant see it, you have to remove the float, but pushing in the tabs on teh bottom, slide it out and you will see the ring, and just use a brush and degreaser and clean it off. put it back and it will work.

I will try to clean it aswell, My connector that goes on the sender looks pretty bad (broken) and i will try to find a new one but in the mean time i will cut the wires and see if bypassing the connector will turn the light off. thanks for the info guys!

Let me know! I have asked 4 times in this thread and no one seems to know (at least they havent responded) if this will work for checking the wiring.

yes, you can jump the wires in between the connectors to turn the light off

Thank you! Obviously I have a wiring problem. Will look into tracing them later.
