CEL Light On; Stomp Test Negative

The check engine light on my 91 325i is coming on when the car starts. After shutting it off (and waiting, or not) I attempt the stomp test. It flashes once, I get ready to take down some codes... and... nothing. It stays solidly lit. Ignition is set to on, stomp accelerator 5 times. Not long ago, the light was coming on occasionally, and it was returning a 1444 code - ie - no faults. Why is it not returning this now if there are no faults?

I emphasized the flashes once because I would expect that if it were the TPS it wouldn't blink once. I could be wrong and haven't checked the throttle position when depressed.

And because I hate posts without pics - here's me at Road America last weekend.

I'm willing to try things now that my DD is running again...

But if no one has any ideas, I guess I'll swap the ECU.

I'd suggest that you take the car to a shop that can read out the fault codes before replacing the DME.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
