2.7i Cold Start...

When I let it sit for a while it doesn't want to start, so I either hit it with some starting fluid and it cranks till it fires up or I have to pop start it. The thing that doesn't make sense to me is how come it will pop start when it is cold but it won't just crank over. I'm up at school now and my car is at home. Any suggestions what it could be? I have a 87 325 bottom end and an 89 325i head, harness, and ecu. Thanks.

when you say pop start...do you mean pushing it in neutral..then dropping the clutch in gear?
