    Head Pre-purchase Checklist

I am starting to piece together the parts needed for my 88 SETA stroker build. I have an 885 head that I plan to check out. I was wondering if there was a checklist prior to purchase that can help me decide whether that particular head is a good candidate.

So far, this is the only information I have from the seller:
    1. Head from an 88 325i.
    2. Head tested at a Napa machine shop for warping. Tech used a straight edge and feelers and said it was good.
    3. Same tech ran vacuum test on the valves and said they were around 28 and that it was good too.
    4. Same tech said there was no need to machine it.

I do not know the mileage on the head. I can look for the obvious carbon build up (unless its been cleaned already) but was wondering if there was any visual checks that I should do before deciding on the head.

I am relatively new to breaking down engine parts but am not afraid to try so any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

You can have the head Magna-Flux'd to check for cracks

Look for oily or varnishy deposits around the valves to check for leaky valve stem seals, but you should replace those anyway

Look at the camlobe faces and rocker faces for any unusual wear or pitting, caused by misadjustment or inadiquite lubrication

Take the cam out and check for scorring or damage to the cam journals, also caused by inadiquite lubrication

I get the feeling Im better off just rebuilding my own 885 SETA head with an upgraded i cam and valve springs.

      Thanks for the feedback.
