    Starter ticking really bad

So i just got done installing another eta motor in my eta winter beater. The first time i started it up it cranked over and started ticking really loud before it started. It seems like the starter is slipping on the flywheel for some reason. Im using the same flywheel and starter as with the old motor and it was fine. It only does it on the third or fourth turn of the motor. Could i have not hooked something up right? I bolted it up tight so i dont think anything it loose. Maybe some wire is wrong? Any ideas would be great. Thanks guys!

Sounds like a weak battery or bad ground...

So should i just go tighten the ground strap on the starter? And why does that make it tick?

Is the starter gear not extending enough?

Should i just replace it with another known working one and see what happens?

if it is indeed the starter, i would say you need a new solenoid.,.. my 2 cents

I replaced it and it still does it. How many wires are supposed to be connected to it? I have three and i feel like one is missing. It seems like the shaft is returning too early rather than engaging the flywheel long enough to start it.

Which wire is supposed to be the ground?

the starter grounds to the tranny, which grounds to the block, which is grounded to the chassis by a short cable on the driver's side of the oil pan, under the air box
