    153 and 173 are basically the same.

    153 is Motronic 1.1
    173 is M 1.3, but no real difference, they are interchangeable.

      hmm, maybe a wiring problem? I only switched the DMEs to try to isolate the relay problem, but if neither worked maybe I need to bust out the wiring diagrams

        what role could the CPS play in this situation? Would a bad CPS cause the DME to not switch on the fuel pump relay/ignition coil? I'll need to get a lab scope to check it out properly, I'm just wondering if this would be worth my time

          No matter what the CPS says, the DME should pump for a second or three when key is initially on.
