So, in a pretty eventful night, I ended up stuck in traffic at 12 in the morning. I was going downhill, so I was just idling the car, and working the brake while the car stayed in neutral. Then I heard a 'pop' and white smoke came pouring out of my hood. After opening the hood, I see this:

I would assume the hose failure was due to being very old, but is there anything else that would cause high coolant pressure? My temp gauge was happily sitting at center. I've never seen it go past center, but it certainly starts from cold as the car warms up.
Now, when I was driving, I heard a 'tap-tap' sound that wasn't engine speed related, but only seemed to be audible when I was really moving. I pulled over the first time I heard it, and found a loose connector. I stuck it back in place, thinking I conquered the noise, but it came back. After that hose exploded on me, I looked again, but that connector was still there. Possibly related?
Who sells the most affordable silcone version of that hose? I did some brief searching, and it looks like they have the radiator upper and lower hoses easily available, but haven't seen one for the water pump to t-stat yet. Is there a 'pet-name' for that hose?
Lastly, what would you recommend to clean all this coolant out of the engine bay? Just Simple Green + roll of paper towels?
Thanks in advance!
