    How does this happen??

Hey Guys, new here and this is my first post. Stock 325i aside from suspension, but I am wondering how this happens??

Cruising along the freeway one night, admiring how well my car runs with 185,000 miles on when after I pull off the freeway I hear some crazy clanking noises and I feared maybe it was the timing belt that went. Sound like valves slapping the piston or something, so I pulled off the valve cover and I see this. Not sure yet if the timing belt was the root cause because I am having trouble getting these damn dist. rotor screws off to pull the TB cover off and it was late last night. But this is a solid piece of the head with that some rod just slides though it and I can can't see any pressure of force being applied to it that would make this happen. Needless to say I am going to need a new head.... Sux.. If it was the timing belt then this is my bad for procrastinating so long, the replacement has been sitting in the garage for months now.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

If you were trying to post pictures then they didnt work.

With the valve cover off you should be able to see at least where the timing belt comes over the cam sprocket. If the sprocket looks bare then the belt is shoved in the corners somwhere or just simply broke and fell down.
