    88 325i Help

    Hello everyone,

I just did a head gasket on my 325i, when I went to start it for the first time it took about 30 tries. After it finally started it was only running on 3 cylinders. I have a "clicking" sound from injectors 2-4-6 but not from 1-3-5. Any ideas where I should start looking?

Thanks for any help you can provide...

Double check all the electrical connections under the manifold.

I just checked the purge valve connection and the throttle body connection and every thing looks good. I also checked the injector harness that is under the manifold and everything is connected. These are the only connections under the intake manifold that I can see.

      thanks for the quick reply...

be sure all the plugs for the injectors are seated properly. Sometimes they will pop out of the harness cover and will not clip in like they should. Also, check the round plug connection under the intake manifold for corrosion.

I have a new set of injectors going in today so I will make sure they get seated correctly. I also noticed there is some corrosion on the round plug(injector harness). I will be cleaning it when I put the new injectors in today.
          Thanks for the input...

The odds of the injectors for cylinder 1,3,5 all being bad are slim. The odds of there being a problem with the power or ground to the injectors for bank 1 is way higher. The most logical candidate, given the recent work would be a problem with C191.

In case you don't know, the injectors are organized into two banks, with cylinders 1,3,5 being bank 1 and cylinders 2,4,6 being bank 2. Switched power is supplied to all injectors on each bank and the DME grounds all the injectors on each bank to deliver fuel. So if all of the injectors on one bank aren't firing, they aren't getting power or aren't getting the ground signal. A bit of work with a meter will tell where the problem is.

Corrosion of C191 from a leak at the throttle body heater is a common problem. Peel back the rubber boots of C191 and take a look.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

That sounds like the problem. I will test it today and let you know.
              Thanks for the great informaton...

+2 on what jlevie said. Corrosion due to leaking throttle body heater is very common on these. Coolant drips down the side onto that connector and corrodes the pins which creates a very high resistance for that connection.

                  Its Running!!!

After pulling the rubber boot off of C191 I found a broken wire. It was the ground wire for injectors 1-3-5. Fixed the wire and she started right up.

Thanks to everybody for all the help, and thanks again jlevie for the detailed information.
