I have a 2.8l stroked block and I need to put a head on it. I have a head, but it has a lot of miles on it and I am told I should get it "reconditioned." What exactly should I ask the machinist to do? What things should I replace? How much does this type of thing generally cost? I also plan on getting a 272 regrind from IE. Any comments on that cam?

Dont buy regrind cams, And dont buy them from IE.
AS for a rebuild on a head. Hot tank. Check for cracks. Resurface if needed. I would have them check out the valve guides, Replace if needed. Replace valve seals no matter what. Have a valve grind and seats done.
Cost is going to be about 250-300 depending on what your machine shop charges per hour. -
A head recondition for a high mileage head would include (at a minimum), new guides, seals, a new cam or having the cam blueprinted, and a 3-angle valve grind. Depending on the degree of wear it could include new exhaust valves, new rocker shafts, and new rockers. Resurfacing might be needed and depending on how much has to be removed from the head an eccentric might need to be added to the cam sprocket to restore cam timing (or you could use a thicker head gasket). The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.
