so does the thermostat housing need to come off to take the IM off?

I still cant figure out how that oil tube is supposed to move

(this is a pic I took of a junkyard car, not mine)

yeah, for some reason imageshack left it 14mp instead of reducing

haha, ok, good - I dont want to buy a new thermostat gasket for 1 month until i do my timing belt and change all that up

lol @ the man junk part, so push down and twist clockwise or?

make sure to get the new seals for the oil return tube. I didnt and have oil everywhere after i did my head gasket/intake gaskets.. The intake is easy to take off, whats hard is getting that oil return (breather) tueb back in at the same time as lining up the intake on the studs. Good luck

i just did it tonight, it was my first time removing the m20 intake manifold. It took me about 4 hours. my engine was running rough so I thought Id change them out just in case. Well...... It didnt, oh well maybe its just time for a new afm.

well, I tracked down my vacuum leak to either this or a leaking injector seal, have a new gasket and I just rebuilt my spare set of injectors with new seals to install as well. Fingers crossed.

I started the project today, have some questions.

I haven't gotten terribly far today but thats ok, I have taken off:
                        1.) the airbox,
                        2.) the ICV
                        3.) the rubber elbow

there are some things I want to know if I should or have to take off,

1.) do these hoses need to come off?
2.) do these hoses need to come off?
                        3.) TPS electrical connector
                        4.) this nut
                        5.) this nut
6.) how do I get to the nut (for the intake manifold) behind a coolant hose or something?
                        7.) this electrical connector
                        8.) the entire thermostat housing
9.) the OBC interface block and or bracket
10 (not pictured) the dipstick tube?

thats all I have for questions at the moment

1, 2, and 3 are attached to the throttle body; it should come loose from the manifold with 4 nuts/washers.

4 and 5 are attached to the IM, so they obviously need to come off.

Push hose 6 out of the way. Looks like a fuel line.

Not sure on 7 and 9, my car doesn't have them. I'd assume they come off pretty easy. 8 can stay. You shouldn't have to open the cooling system at all...#1 are actually coolant hoses going to the throttle body, so set the TB itself aside with those still attached if you can.

You're making this way harder than it is. The drain tube is the only difficult part (at least when the engine is out of the car, although I'm assuming it's just tedious to get the nuts with it in). A Bentley manual would really, really help you.

Jush finished installing the new intake mani gasket,

it turned out to be quite difficult and the order in which you have to do things is very specific (Bentley, Haynes and BMW service manuals were next to no help and rated them as a hard difficulty)

                            turned out:
1.) dont need to come off, but can.
2.) dont need to come off
3.) doesnt need to come off
4.) needs to be un done
5.) needs to be un done
6.) was indeed a fuel line, pushed away, got right to the nut I needed
7.) probably doesnt need to be un done but I did.
8.) doesnt need to come off
9.) doesnt need to come off
10.) needs to be un fastened but can remain as-is.

I have lots of pictures during the process if I get un lazy enough to put them up here

just replaced the IM gasket on my e30 because of a verry rough idle.this seemsto have fixed it straight away

runs so much better with the new gasket

still starts a bit rough though

whats the fist suspect on taking quite a few cranks before firing? injectors?

I bought a brand new thermostat housing and gasket, a throttle body gasket, coolant temp sensor, as well as the intake gaskets, also removed a bunch of plumbing from the cooling system and a new starter. And if your ever gone do a starter it's the right time.

can someone post a picture of the coolant temp sensor for the M20B25?

i wanna replace mine when i do the tune up but cant find number for the part....:(
