hesitating/misfiring on the highway every half hour

Sending this from a phone. My friend and I are driving an 86 325e from texas to florida. About 4 hrs into the drive, it starts hesitating when we get on the gas a little bit. We pulled over, let it cool for a bit and all was well. It has been doing this every half hour since then.

Once it cools a bit, it runs like a champ again. We are trying to let it cool longer than we have been to see if that will let us make it to an hour without the hesitation problem. We plan to do this until a parts store opens in the morning and we can try changing the fuel filter and checking the spark plugs.

Any other thoughts on what to check? Help would be greatly appreciated.

Update: almost to fl. The longer we let it sit, the further it will go without the hesitating problem. Found a 24 hr walmart and replaced the fuel filter, we thought it worked, but the problem came back 2 hrs later.

Check the wire and see if one came off?

This sounds like a fuel delivery problem. Possibly a weak pump or rust in the tank being sucked up onto the pump's inlet screen.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

We were able to get the car back to FL. I'll be able to tear into the car a bit this weekend. It's nice that it doesn't need to be a daily driver. Thanks for the replies, those are the things I will check first.
