There are a number of things that can cause misfires, but in my experience the list starts (in order of probablility) with:
intake leaks
fuel delivery or injector problems
bad distributor cap, rotor, wires, plugs
A smoke test is the only sure way of finding all intake leaks. Running through the suite of fuel system tests in the Bentley manual will tell if there's a problem with fuel delivery and having the injectors cleaned and flow tested is really the only way to be sure that the injectors aren't part of the problem. The ignition system is easy. If old, just replace the components. The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

i had the fuel tested at the bmw dealer ship my friends a tech there and the maf too it is getting spark but maybe not like it should be i will be pulling the car apart tomorrow so i will check but the other things, this i forgot to say is it sometimes it runs great and than bad than great than bad now its just bad.sigpicComment

What are the circumstances in which it runs poorly? i.e. its humid outside?
Does it do it at start up on a cold engine or a warm engine? etc...Comment

its been real cold but it starts but sometimes real bad or right away i think the vacuum leak is something i will look at bc it will rev high and low i didnt even think about it but even when its warm up it will run bad and than great than bad againsigpicComment

I had a similar problem with an interment misfire, and it turned out to be a defective plug wire on a fairly new set.sigpicComment

intake boot, intake manifold gasket, the hose that runs from the throttlebody to the valve cover, all the other damned vacuum hoses. Some are obviously easier than others. I'd check that intake boot first, they like to crack on the bottom side so it can be difficult to see. Take it off and look at it.Comment
