    Did I just destroy my motor?

    Hi, I hate this to be my first post, I recently bought an 89 325ic and have noticed a fairly erratic temprature and the engine itself felt a heck of a lot warmer than it should have so I started to investigate today. Im going to spare all the details but this is the result.




    I guess my main point of fear is this is the engine correct? This was caused by over tightening the lower bolt when re-attatching the thermostat housing.

    the thermostat housing is completely independent of the engine, go to a local u pull yard or online and order a new thermostat housing with gaskets, you'll be fine.

    next time, pay attention to torque settings incase its on something important.

      Torque specs are very important on engine components because of vibration and heat changes. It's also important to read the torques correctly. 79 pound inches is VERY different than 79 pound feet. Ask me how I know...

        Thanks for the quick reply, I was in panic mode. with all the gunk i couldnt see that this was in fact its own part, i thought what i remoed to get to the thermostat was the thermostat housing. Ive got it for the most part loose theres a thread on that around here i skimmed not too long ago ill go find that.

        I'm a bit of an amateur with this all the work ive done previously has been tighten till it dont no more with a small degree of common sense i thought i was working on a steel part. where can i find these specs on the torque and the very dumb question of any recommendation on the tool for measuring that.

            The tool for measuring installation torque is called a torque wrench.

            That'll be five bucks.

              I thought I'd keep it in one thread to keep the clutter, I bought from Autohaus AZ a new thermostat housing I have not gotten back to the garage yet with it but noticed something was wrong. I have on my factory thermostat housing 2 ports for sensors, on the new housing i just got I have 4 holes drilled and threaded for I would guess sensors. The factory part had the casting for these ports but from my photos and memory they weren't drilled and threaded. Do I have the flat out wrong part, if so out of curiosity what does this belong 2 and what are the other sensors. Is there a correct part to be bought somewhere or would people agree with the idea I am having to check out some supply stores for a brass bolt and o ring to seal these or is that foolish?

              The two sensor holes I have is for the hose to the upper radiator directly from the engine connector one high and one low. Can anyone offer some thoughts on this off the top of their heads?

              Edit: Autohaus says they have a note in their inventory system that the part should be purchased with 2 14mm brass bolts w/gasket/oring for like 90 cents each. This doesn't seem to be noted anywhere on their website. That said I will start hunting around for a way to plug these.

                the extra holes are for an Eta motor. We have 4 whereas the I motor has 2. Plug the extras off, and call it a day.

                  Go to any auto parts house and look through their collection of drain plugs. They'll have one that will work.
